Last night's gaming

Last night saw a bumper showing of, um, approximately 14 people I think.

We split into three tables, playing:

• Jacob Marley, Esq., 6 Nimmt!
• Saboteur, Forbidden Island, Zombie Dice
• Innovation

... accompanied by the dulcet tones of ukuleles.

The barmaid checked the diary, and next Thursday has no bookings that would interfere with our gaming.

A note about December

We all know what December's like.

People: They have parties and school nativity plays and family functions and after-work drinks that get in the way of the important business of playing board games.
Pubs: They fill up with seasonal revellers, who spend money on upwards of three drinks each, which makes it difficult to find room for a bunch of board gamers.

For these reasons, check here or on the mailing list before rolling up to Newbold Comyn on a Thursday night in December expecting to play games.

Tonight (being November) is definitely on. Next week, 1st December, is probable. The following week, 8th December is questionable. The 15th is unlikely. The 22nd is fanciful.

But do check here. Two or more people, and an assurance from the bar staff that there'll be room, is all we need.

It's Thursday, it must be Board Silly night.

8pm at the Newbold Comyn Arms, as usual.

Over on the newsgroup, John E has indicated that he'd like to play Innovations (alas, not the game of the catalogue)

I missed the rules explanation last week & didn't grok the scoring system until it was too late. I didn't see many scoring cards. The dog ate my best cards and my homework. And so on. It looked good but I didn't know what I was doing. Usual Thursday night (before anyone else cracks that joke).

John is also bringing Amyitis:

... a club game that Andrew H and I worked out how to play earlier this week. We only had time to play a couple of practice rounds but it looks interesting & it was less than £8.

Not only that, but:

I will also bring a simpler game with which to welcome any newcomers who, as always, don't even have to pay the 50p contribution to the games fund.

As for myself, I will bring Jacob Marley Esquire, because the Christmas lights are up on the Parade, and although it's still November, there may not be many more chances to play before January. Anyway, it's not really a Christmas game at all: it's a game of wanton usury for 3-6 players; a game of unprincipled banking. Whatever next?

I won't be there. But I know for a fact that at least two other people will be (and that doesn't even include the bar staff).

Last week's board games

Last week we had 8 players at two tables. One table played Princes of Florence, and the other played Forbidden Island.

Princes of Florence is rather good. I didn't hear any opinions on Forbidden Island.

There will be all kinds of fascinating games on offer.

Newcomers can be assured of a warm welcome, and a game suited to their experience.

There will be at least one of (and probably all of): playing cards, counters, scoring tracks, dice.

Oh, and boards.

Last Thursday's gaming

There were three tables' worth of gamers on Thursday, spread throughout the pub, serenaded by the ukulele group that's established itself in the far end. I didn't get to see what other people were playing, so here's what I did:

I took part in a four player game of Alien Frontiers, in which dice represent your spaceships, you build your fleet by acquiring more dice, and use them to colonise a planet. It seems to have potential, but there's considerable downtime as each player considers their options.

I then moved to another table for a quick came of Nile -- the "deluxor edition". It's a card game of planting and harvest in the presence of flood, locusts and pesky opponents. Very enjoyable, although I suspect victory is more in the hand of The Fates than in strategy.

Last Thursday's gaming

Hmm, left it a while before posting.

A table of three played two games of Dominion, one with the "first game" cards, then with the "village square" cards. I thought it was excellent.

Another table played the misleadingly titled Infinite City followed by Caylus Magna Carta.

Gary says of Caylus Magna Carta - "It's a card game version of an existing board game. Everyone would rather play the board game, and they'd rather play a different board game to that." Scathing!
